University of Strathclyde: Research Excellence in Scotland's Largest City

THE University of Strathclyde is recognized for teaching and research excellence, as well as strong connections with British industry, government and business, contributing to the creation of great opportunities for its students.

Located in the center of Glasgow, Scotland, Strathclyde features modern building facades, combined with interiors reminiscent of scenes from the Harry Potter films (the campus is even close to the Glenfinnan Viaduct, where the famous Hogwarts Express passed). .

The university was created in the distant year of 1796, when Professor John Anderson wanted to found a “useful learning space”, becoming the first institution of higher education in Scotland during the Enlightenment period and one of the few to offer education to men. and women from all walks of life at that time.

Its reputation for developing high-impact research dates back many years. Among the list of notable former students of Strathclyde are the engineer John Logie Baird, creator of television – when in 1924 he transmitted images of ventriloquist dummies -, video recording, fiber optics and infrared night vision; James Blyth, one of the first scientists to use wind as an energy source; Henry Faulds, creator of the concept that fingerprints can identify specific people; and James Young, creator of the oil refinery industry.

Nowadays, the university continues to receive great recognition awards. In 2012, it was considered by Times Higher Education as the University of the Year and, in 2016, it won the British award for Business School of the Year. With that, she is one of the youngest partners of loveUK.

Strathclyde ranks among the UK's top 20 research-intensive universities and Business School teaching remains one of the top 10 in the Queen's land. Additionally, seven of its engineering departments are in the top 10 for research.

All this reputation has attracted students from all over the world. The university has a community of around 20,000 international students from 130 countries, but is looking for more.

Currently, the institution does not have Brazilians in its history, but this is a situation that will soon change, as stated by Professor Douglas Brodie, Dean of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences.

“We have a plan to reach Brazilian students and bring them to our courses, whether undergraduate or graduate. In the coming years, we hope to bring together a Brazilian community on campus, and we are even currently evaluating the possibility of closing partnerships with universities in Brazil”, explains the professor.

Brodie also says that the university seeks in international students not only intellectual prominence, but also emotional preparation to enter a course. “It's not easy to study abroad, because there you don't have friends and family, they are far away, so I think an international student has to be resilient, sociable and have a mature emotional state”.

In addition to directing the department that includes the schools of Education, Government and Public Policy, Humanities, Law, Psychological Sciences and Health and Social Work and Social Policy, Brodie is considered an authority when it comes to Labor Law, as having published a number of very well recognized books in the UK, such as “A History of British Labor Law (2003), The Employment Contract (2005), The Contract of Employment (2008) and Enterprise Liability and the Common Law (2010).

With all this baggage in the labor area, he says that the courses offered in Strathclyde for Law are some of the ones that most attract international students, and their teaching is even considered the best in Scotland. “The intensity of the research is remarkable and I can say that our team includes the greatest specialists in the area”, says the professor.

Strathclyde excels in many other courses offered. Second Ranking 2019 by The Complete University Guide, the university ranks first in seven areas, namely: Accounting & Finance; Aural & Oral Studies; Communication & Media Studies; Hospitality, Leisure, Recreation & Tourism; Medical Technology; Pharmacology & Pharmacy; and Social Policy. In second place are the Architecture and Marketing courses.
