Founded in 1495, the University of Aberdeen is the fifth oldest university in English-speaking countries in the world and currently ranks in the top 30 in the UK. The institution is located in the historic city of the same name, in the north of Scotland, considered the second most affordable in all of the Queen's land, according to a survey by the Royal Bank of Scotland Student Living Index 2017.
Aberdeen has an international student community from 120 countries, the majority of which are women (51%). Its campus is considered the safest in Scotland, according to the Complete University Guide, and one of the largest in Europe for wireless connectivity.

The university offers over 550 undergraduate and over 120 postgraduate courses, divided into 3 main departments:
– Arts and Social Sciences – which includes courses focused on Divinity; History; Philosophy; Education; Law; Social Science; Language; Literature; Music and Visual Culture.
– Life Sciences and Medicine – Biological Sciences; Medicine; Medical Sciences; Nutrition and Psychology.
– physical sciences – Engineering; Geosciences and Natural and Computing Sciences.
According to the 2017 National Student Survey, Biology, Molecular Biology and Pharmacology courses are the first in terms of student satisfaction in the UK and, according to the same survey, Civil Engineering, Physical Geography, Cinematics and Photography are the first in the quality of teaching.

Other courses are also well positioned in the newest ranking of the UK University League Tables and Rankings, promoted by the independent website The Complete University Guide, as is the case of Linguistics (3rd); Law (5th); Drama, Dance & Cinematics (5th); General Engineering (10th); Economics (12th); and Medicine (13th).
For the Engineering field, other qualifications have been achieved in recent years, such as its inclusion in the world's top 50 and the fact that graduates of this course in Aberdeen earn the highest salaries in the UK, according to the DfE LEO dataset 2017. Vale remember that the city is the center of the oil and gas industry, being in constant collaboration and contact with the university.
With so many rankings and recognitions, its students are expected to win Nobel prizes. Aberdeen counts five of its students awarded the prestigious award throughout history, among them is John James Rickard Macleod, responsible for the research that led to the use of insulin for the treatment of diabetes, in 1923.

Other notable names have passed through Aberdeen, such as James Blair, founder of the College of William and Mary, the second oldest university in the United States; Patrick Manson, the first physician to suggest that malaria was transmitted by mosquitoes; William Thornton, who designed the US Capitol; and James Hutchison, inventor of the first full-body MRI scanner (1980).
Current alumni include actor Iain Glen, known for his role as Jorah Mormont in the hit television series Game of Thrones, and JK Rowling, author of the prestigious Harry Potter saga (with an honorary degree).
