Education at Middlesex University London focuses on job readiness

For editing this loveUK Universities We present Middlesex University London, an institution that has been operating for almost 140 years in North London, England, being the only modern university in the city to be among the 500 best in the world, according to the Times Higher Education World University ranking.

With a community of 21,000 students – of which around 8,800 are international – the university offers courses in three areas: Science and Technology, Social Sciences and Arts and Creative Industries.

Middlesex was created from the merger of three polytechnic colleges in the region, still in 1878, including an all-female institution. As early as 1990 the university extended its international presence by founding the first regional office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, followed by other offices across Europe in 1995.

Awarded Silver in the Teaching Excellence Framework 2017 for teaching quality and student outcomes, Middlesex was judged to have consistently exceeded national quality requirements in British higher education.

Research conducted at the university covers 29 areas, including psychology, exact sciences, music, dance, arts, biomedicine, finance, sports and criminology. 58% of these surveys are considered to be of international excellence, according to research by the UK Funding Councils.

Focused on preparing its students for the job market, Middlesex has a teaching method aimed at this objective, with wide use of practical classes. “This explains why more than 90% of our graduates are employed or pursuing higher education just six months after graduating,” explains Gabriela Mendez, Americas and Caribbean Regional Officer at the university. The institution's monitoring and support for employment continues to take place even after the student graduates.

Also according to Gabriela, courses such as Business, Design (including Fashion, Graphics and Interiors) and Computer Science are the most popular among international students, showing the institution's international recognition.

The Brazilian community at Middlesex has grown in recent years, demonstrating great academic experience. Their most popular courses are Business Management, Design, Cybercrime & Digital Investigation and Medical Physiology. “Every year we receive a good number of applications from Brazilians. The university welcomes them every year for their positive contributions to our community,” says Gabriela.

Located 30 minutes from central London, Middlesex is located in a residential area and was recently included in the Workplace Equality Index ranking (position 264 out of 439 workspaces) by the LGBT organization Stonewall, indicating that LGBT employees have a safe space to be themselves.

“One of the reasons why Middlesex is a smart choice is that accommodation and other facilities around the campus are cheaper than those located in central London and the fees for our courses are quite enticing,” explains Gabriela.

In 2005 the university decided to expand overseas, founding three campuses in Dubai, Mauritius (2009) and Island of Malta (2013), in addition to partnering with more than 100 universities from 22 countries.

With this, it is possible for undergraduate students to transfer to other campuses, as long as their course is offered there. Thus, there is even the possibility of doing a four-year degree at the four campuses, starting in London.

According to Gabriela, a student who is interested in applying to Middlesex must take into account that recruiters value compliance with academic requirements and professional experience is a decisive item. “The best way to stand out is to present a good portfolio or curriculum, but more than academic success, we are looking for international students who will contribute, on a large scale, to the university, study groups and other environments”.

From Fresher's Week to graduation, the university promotes a series of events throughout the year – such as the MDXmas Fair, Degree Fashion Show and PG Connect -, seeking to integrate its students and make the academic experience there memorable.
