
The Russell Group represents 24 of the UK's leading higher education institutions, which are committed to maintaining the highest levels of research, an excellent teaching and learning experience and unrivaled links with business and the public sector.
The group was founded in 1994 by the universities themselves and in principle there were 17. The main reason for meeting was to ask the government to start making decisions that would benefit member universities in matters such as funding and research. The group adopted this name at the Russell Hotel in London, where they met.
The organization's main objective is to help ensure that participating universities have the best conditions to thrive and continue to produce social, economic and cultural impacts through their first-rate research and teaching. Russell Group member universities play an important role in the intellectual life of the UK and have enormous social, economic and cultural impacts in the UK and around the world.
